bob is born

Bob is the orange fish that you can see on the Angelfish logo. He was created by Srey May, a nine-year-old girl from NASCO orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Here is his story...

Hi, I'm Bob and I am an orange fish. I swam into life by way of a competition that was held at NASCO orphanage in Phnom Penh in February 2007. NASCO is an orphanage for children whose parents have died or are suffering from HIV/Aids. The children from the orphanage were taken to the seaside one day back in January 2007 (for more details, see the Recent News page). The lady who took them was a swimming teacher and she wanted to set up a swimming programme so more children could have fun learning to swim.

The lady was talking to lots of people - people from NGOs, and swimmers, and disabled people - and the future was looking bright. There was a swimming pool and changing rooms and everyone was interested - there was lots of support. They even had a name - Angelfish. But how could she let everybody know about Angelfish? She needed something that would show everybody what Angelfish was. She needed a fish.

So off she went with her partner on their rickety bicycles to the stationery store. They bought coloured pencils and paper and felt-tip pens and then they went back to the orphanage and told the children about the Angelfish Competition. All 27 children at the orphanage were to draw a picture of a fish and the winner would get a watch so that they would always know what time it was. Tthe children sat and they drew and they wibbled and they scribbled and all the fish grew! And they squiggled and they scrawled and they doodled and they hauled until...I was born!

I had lots of brothers and sisters (26 in fact) and I didn't know at the time that I would be the winner of the Angelfish Competition, but all that mattered was that I was a fish and I was orange and I was happy. The lady and the man took me off with all the other fishes and sat with their friends to decide who was going to be The Fish...The Angelfish! I was very nervous and had to sit very very still whilst they decided. About an hour later the vote was cast and it was decided by three votes to one that bob was the winner and...I was bob!

Then the lady went back to the orphanage and announced, "bob is the winner!" and everybody clapped. Srey May who drew me came to the front to get her watch and the lady thanked everybody for their help and, as for me, well...

bob is launched out to sea

I was destined for big things! I was going out into the big blue!

But first, the lady took me back home with her to England over the land and the seas (I was too small to go on my own as I am only a very small orange fish). When she was back in Cambridge she put me in a cupboard. I was happy in the cupboard with my fish friends, but soon I began to get wriggly and scriggly and I dived and I writhed and I wanted to swim out of the cupboard and see things!

Happily, the lady took me to see her friend, the Graphic Design Man, who X-rayed me and put me on his computer. At first it felt a bit strange, to be swimming on a big bright screen when before I was on a bit of white paper, but I soon felt at home. The Graphic Design Man spent ages making me small and then big, and he tried me with a wand and a wig, and he made me fat and he made me thin - he pulled me right out of my orange skin! But soon I was just right.

So the Graphic Design Man invited the lady and the man over to his house for dinner. They sat and they ate and they chatted 'til it was late, and then they all went silent. It was time. Time for Graphic Design Man to unveil...bob the angelfish!

Here I am - I hope you like me. It was such an exciting journey to get here and I'm looking forward to many more adventures to come...see you in the pool sometime soon!
